Being The Purveyor of Destiny…

What’s up all?
I know!! Crazy long time since I posted anything eh? Partially due to me being busy and partially because Dave and Frank have felt the need to post that ridiculous video of me at the Coyote Rock Gym Tour De Bloc. Ridiculous!
So as I progress as a competitor and learn more about this beautiful sport, I’ve taken bigger steps to realizing that plastic climbing is an end unto itself. The last couple of months have been challenging, and definitely at full busy level with being the Purveyor Of Destiny (head route setter/head instructor) at True North Climbing Inc, plus the crazy hours of trying to get prepared and ready to compete at Tour De Bloc Nationals. On top of this, I’ve gotten some great opportunities coming up in the near future for me as a route setter.
dustin curtis vs. ottawa men’s open finals
Dustin Curtis is a tremendous athlete. Super strong. A keen sense of balance. Tenacious in every sense of the word. But what really sets him apart is the fact that beneath all this natural ability beats the heart of a showman! Boy knows how to work a crowd! The following video gives you some indication of two things:
- how entertaining Dustin is to watch
- how utterly difficult the men’s open finals problems were at Coyote’s in Ottawa
We’ll have plenty more Dustin-centric video in the coming weeks but for now this little clip should keep you amused. enjoy.
beta vs. tdb live @ true north!

don't you just wanna get your grubby, chalky hands all over that virgin plastic? if you signed up for saturday's tdb comp you'll get your chance!
are you as stoked as we are to check out the newest climbing gym in ontario? mmmm…there’s just something about that new gym smell that gets me everytime! and what better way to test the walls than with ye olde tour de bloc? what’s that you say? how about if you were pullin’ on all that good comp plastic sportin’ some new beta threads you scored on the premises!?! well your wish is our command, jackson!
the travelling beta sideshow
ever wondered how we sell beta at the various tour de bloc comps we sponsor? the following video gives you some idea. shot during our epic ottawa road trip at the TdB eastern regionals held at coyote rock gym on February 20, 2010.

learing the rope at the USA climbing route setting clinic (can you spot Dustin?)
So, Frank, Dave and Jamie have all been on me to make a blog posting, especially since so much has happened since my last update. And since Mark managed to post something just before he leaves to crush everything in Mexico, I figure I’m out of the ‘too busy excuse.’
Above is a picture taken by Chris Danielson. I attended a level two route setting clinic held by him, and Molly Beard of USA climbing. The point of the clinic is to not just to stuff a bunch of route setters in a gym and let them feed off of each others creative energy but also to help cultivate their talents and, most importantly, to help pick and choose setters that USA Climbing will allow to intern and assist for their National Level comps. They use these clinics to help train setters so that they can run, organize and set regional level comps but also to evaluate which setters will move up to set ABS Nationals or SCS Nationals or US Youth Nationals.

Dustin lays the smackdown in Coyote
what’s up all? It’s been a while so I thought I would drop in and give props out to Dave for the sneak peak of his SICK new styles! It looks amazing bro!
mark gets crowned as the King of Grade/KG in the world, so sick bro, keep cranking!!
so where was everyone this weekend? Coyote held their annual Fall Classic Comp and it seems like everyone just decided not to go, unless you were in Ottawa. I just didn’t see the faces I normally attach to the comp season. Oh well, you guys missed out on some amazing problems, some brand new holds and mats and of course an awesome atmosphere. Kerry Briggs took home first for Women’s Open and on the Men’s side, I got lucky and had a good day.
nothing much else has been going on, been doing a lot of renovations here at Off The Wall. New bouldering wall, started renovating the route walls, the changes just keep on coming.I’m currently finishing up a review on the Evolv K-lace I’ll let you know when that’s up and other than that, nothing much.
two weeks ago I sent a bolted project of mine that I bolted a year ago, I called it Duplicitous probably weighing in at 5.12+ but I don’t know, I need Mark to come up here and destroy it for me. Anyways, back at. Peace all.
