a different kind of road trip...
so now that we are officially in fall, at times feeling more like winter (who wears a down jacket in October, seriously) trips to the crag have been slowing down, but trips to meet with clients wanting their very own bit of Beta has kept life very busy. The response that we have been getting from everyone when we explain the whole program has been overwhelming! Their reactions flow something like this: intrigue, surprise, shock, excitement, giddiness, salivating, and anticipation. Hey, we could have our very own seven-stages of Beta…much more fun than those pesky seven stages of dying.
during all of the meetings in the past couple months there is a constant refrain that I find I keep saying when people start explaining their dream garments, and that is…”we can do that” We can do that 2” collar, or invisible zipper, contrasting stitching, or embroidered company logo (by this point client’s are in the giddy stage) It is only when we tell them that their finished garments are typically the same price, or less than what they would buy from retailers do they enter into the 7th and final climactic stage of Beta.
although I am not shocked by these reactions as much anymore, seeing the excitement of our client’s never wears thin. Everywhere from Stratford to Kingston people are finding Beta, and discovering how powerful, personal, and affordable their own clothing can be. So as word of this program, still in its infancy, spreads like H1N1 it looks like it is going to be a busy remainder of the year.
cheers,
James
a new era for beta…

a new era for beta has begun...
stronger…faster…smarter…the beta brand is now better than ever.
after several months of getting organized and signing a major financing deal, we are now back on the scene and this time with some real muscle behind us.
we are super psyched to finally be in a position to truly be creative and develop our best products ever!
more importantly, for the first time in our brands short history we will be able to enjoy the simple pleasures other brands take for granted like having inventory, colour and size selections and a budget for the little things like advertising and staff.
for all those that have stuck by us over the years, who have helped spread the word and push the brand…for those that have waited and asked every year wtf?
we can finally say, watch us now and see what we do…
more importantly thanks for sticking by us for so long and believing in our dreams as much as we did.
cleaning up our branding…

our new branding...cleaner and stronger
there comes a time to step back and analyze the message you convey through your branding and for us that time is now. With our anticipation of great things for the future we wanted to quickly stop for a second and look at the core message of our brand.
after much discussion and review we finalized our design changes and here they are (right). We took the best of the old and got rid of the rest, we wanted to build a cleaner relationship between our spiral logo and the word beta and most importantly we wanted people to really start learning what beta (outside of climbing) stands for.
oh and we got ourselves a company colour…that’s beta blue you’re looking at.
what’s in a name?

the Mileski wall in his honour, el potrero chico, mexico
it is believed that Jack Mileski, a well-known climber and route developer first coined the term “beta”. He was one of the first to use a “betamax” video recorder (one of the worlds first camcorders) to film a friend climbing his route. While watching the video it became clear that someone could capture all the climbing movement on a route and study it, prior to investing time and energy on the actual moves. This method was quickly duplicated with many projects of the day, and soon everyone was asking whether or not there was “beta” for a specific route.
over time this term has evolved to the point, where any information about a route is considered “beta”. Now it is very common to hear climbers requesting the “beta” for a specific move, or route. It is unclear whether Jack ever intended to leave such a mark on the climbing community, but unintentional or not “beta” is now clearly entrenched in the climbing world.
going Beyond Everything Tried Already…
it seemed perfect to have created such an abbreviation with B.E.T.A. Jack Mileski pushed the limits of what was currently established by creatively using available technology. We at Beta want to continue with this idea by constantly pushing our own established views of what performance and fashion mean. We want to create a brand that clearly innovates, creates and keeps things exciting, while still remaining entrenched in active communities everywhere.
who we are

concept work for the newest collection
we’re an award winning, performance fashion brand that chooses to produce smaller, high quality collections in limited quantities and sell them at fair prices.
combining our experiences outdoors with our love for all things urban, we work to fuse street style with sport performance and evolve functional urban fashion.
in this single minded pursuit of change we refuse to cut corners, we’re committed to using only the highest quality fabrics and materials and proudly produce our clothing in a socially responsible environment, in Canada.
in an industry defined by mass production and volume, we want to have the smallest footprint while making the greatest impact. The result of every small choice is reflected in the clothing we make, and in the people that choose our brand.
enjoy your time with us.
beta wins the ford fashion award…
yes we won an award and it was awesome…but we didn’t let it change us. The glitz and the glamour, the papporatzi, the money, they all have an effect on lesser brands but we have remained very humble…
i mean truthfully, we didn’t need to win an award to know that we were the best.
learn more about our night in the spotlight by watching the videos below and the slideshow…enjoy it, it was a lot of fun and one hell of a good night.
thanks to everyone that voted and helped out along the way.
