Being The Purveyor of Destiny…

What’s up all?

I know!! Crazy long time since I posted anything eh? Partially due to me being busy and partially because Dave and Frank have felt the need to post that ridiculous video of me at the Coyote Rock Gym Tour De Bloc. Ridiculous!

So as I progress as a competitor and learn more about this beautiful sport, I’ve taken bigger steps to realizing that plastic climbing is an end unto itself. The last couple of months have been challenging, and definitely at full busy level with being the Purveyor Of Destiny (head route setter/head instructor) at True North Climbing Inc, plus the crazy hours of trying to get prepared and ready to compete at  Tour De Bloc  Nationals. On top of this, I’ve gotten some great opportunities coming up in the near future for me as a route setter.

air jamaica and the road to recovery

Happy to finally be on the mend

So lots has happened since arriving home from Mexico. I have been going to physiotherapists, chiropractors, and sports doctors non-stop in order to try and figure out what was wrong with my elbow.

After an x-ray, ultrasound, and finally an MRI, the results say its peritendonitis on my left elbow that has been plaguing my life for the couple months since the point of injury back in November.

dustin curtis vs. ottawa men’s open finals

dustin curtis at coyote's tdb regionals

man or dancing machine?

Dustin Curtis is a tremendous athlete. Super strong. A keen sense of balance.  Tenacious in every sense of the word.  But what really sets him apart is the fact that beneath all this natural ability beats the heart of a showman!  Boy knows how to work a crowd!  The following video gives you some indication of  two things:

  • how entertaining Dustin is to watch
  • how utterly difficult the men’s open finals problems were at Coyote’s in Ottawa

We’ll have plenty more Dustin-centric video in the coming weeks but for now this little clip should keep you amused.  enjoy.

the long kiss goodnight

Goodbye Old Girl, we hardly knew ye...

Thursday March 11, 2010 marked the end of an era both for Beta Clothing Designs and for the Toronto climbing community at large.  That date marked the official closing of the Toronto Climbing Academy’s original location at Broadview and Queen, and with it the family home of one of the most amazing, diverse, dynamic and generous climbing communities in the city.

TCA, that, ugly, squat, barn-like building at 100a Broadview was the place where David and Mark Smith fell in love with climbing in their teens, and spent the next 12 years devoted to this beautiful, glorious, challenging sport.  The Toronto Climbing Academy was also the place where, in 2001 Beta Clothing Designs Inc.  was born and where, later, like many others before,  Dave would even meet his future wife one fateful evening.

TCA changed my life as well.
