Coming Full Circle…

The St. Lawrence Market - A Toronto Landmark

The other day I was fortunate enough to experience one of those rare “eureka” moments. A moment of clearer understanding; it was as if I had stepped back from my own life for just a second and saw everything from a new perspective.

In this moment, I saw, really for the first time, that in a very organic and unintentional way, so much of my childhood and growing up, had lead me to the very place I stood. From the chaos, that at those times simply appeared to be the process of learning and living life, I saw a defining characteristic of my personality being cultivated. For this brief moment, like a railway cutting through a valley, I saw the connections between almost every experience I could remember. For a moment I saw the fabric of my life and in that moment, I started to understand.

Oh (Sweet Damn) Canada!

national team

The Canadian National Open Division Climbing Team

Coming up to Canada Day it is easy to start feeling a little patriotic, living in the greatest country in the world and all. We have an economy that is quickly becoming the envy of every other country in the world. We hosted, what was by many accounts, a wildly successful Olympics in one of the most beautiful cities in the Country. All the while Canadians continue to have a reputation for being some of the nicest, friendliest people you will ever meet. Almost makes me want to get a big screaming maple leaf tattooed somewhere unmentionable….don’t worry I said almost. So with Beta being run by three unabashedly patriotic Canadians, we wanted in on the nationalistic fervor. We decided to do what we do best, make Canadians look good, but this time it was for the rest of the world to see.

A couple of years ago we were approached by the CCC (Competition Climbing Canada) to design the National Climbing team uniform. After those first designs we revamped things with the feedback of two of our ambassadors, and National Team members Dustin Curtis and Bonnie Debruijn to create the new National team tops for both men and women. With a new fit, design and detailing, both tops received rave reviews from the National team members as they represented proudly at the World Cup in Vail Colorado. By some accounts, the new uniforms caught the eye of some other countries competitors, I won’t name names, but they are the big country next door to us.

So, we didn’t want to limit these new designs to those freakishly strong climbers who could inadvertently rip the door handles off your car. We wanted everyone to be able to show their inner patriotic William Shatner or Rachel McAdams in true performance fashion. That is why we have a limited supply of the men’s and women’s tops for sale, albeit without the CCC and Canada logos. To get the official team editions you must have at least 8 door handles in your collection and a top 10 finish in the Tour de Bloc series.

Enjoy the home grown patriotic performance fashion, and wave your flag proudly Canada, you’ve earned it.

performance fashionistas

Fashion Television Screen Shot

Fashion Television shows us some love.

Beta’s always been proud of our commitment to creating athletic attire and we’re dedicated to making the best clothes we can locally and responsibly.

But we’re also very serious about the fashion side of performance fashion.  Beta believes that it’s all well and good to stick by your principles when you make yer threads but what good is it if no one thinks your clothes are cool enough to wear?  After all, we did win a very prestigious award at fashion week a few years back…

So we were very excited and über-grateful to get some love from no less an authority on the state of Canadian fashion than FashionTelevision.com for our sense of style.

progression shorts review!

Our all new Organic Cotton and Chitosante Progression Short

Hey everybody!  So the results are in and the new shorts in my mind are the best pair Beta has ever produced. The Progression shorts are exactly that:  the result of producing shorts for the last 10 years and refining them every time until finally getting something that can satisfy the largest amount of people and out-perform all its predecessors.

I have helped in developing and testing all the Beta shorts right from the beginning, but realize that given i truly care about the performance and look of my climbing shorts, i was NOT a bias part owner of Beta saying ” i love them, now lets just sell them”.

we’re just getting warmed up…

have you seen me?

now appearing on a lamp post and telephone pole near you!

the weather has been AMAZING the past couple of days, non?  everyone’s finally starting to shed their winter skin in earnest and slipping into something a little more appropriate for the warmer weather, patios and sunshine, road trips and cottage weekends.  if you find yourself coming up “short” in the summer threads department, we’ve got some new styles that’d do the trick nicely, natch.

fact is, while most folks’ minds are turning towards thoughts of vacation, we’ll be working harder than ever taking Beta to the next level!

(not) scale models

Shaun & Cosette

ham & cheese

One of my favourite fashion model quotes of all times comes courtesy of Linda Evangelista whose claim to fame (well beside all those magazine covers and dating a world cup winning keeper) was the uber-cheeky quote in Vogue that “we don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day”.

I’ve never been involved in a proper fashion shoot but the few that Ais, Dave and I have managed for Beta have been nothing but a crazy-good time.  And the beauty of having pretty friends that don’t mind you telling them where to stand for hours on end and painting slogans across their bods is that they work substantially less than $10k. pizza, beer and an armful of Beta clothing is all it takes.  And like McDonald’s, the smiles are free.  Read the rest of this entry »
